Justin Masterson pitched well again tonight, going 6 innings and giving up one run. Okay, this is officially unfair. Now, the Red Sox have a new "Big Three" brewing with Clay Buchholz, Jon Lester, and Masterson. Their respective ages: 23 ,24, 23. That's pretty good. Now, put them behind Josh Beckett and Daisuke Matzusaka and that's formidable. Actually, it might end up making them dominant. When Beckett's contract comes up, they might be good enough to let Beckett go without worrying about losing too much pitching. I realize I might be a little too early in congratulating the Red Sox considering none of them have accomplished much, but it would be hard to believe that they would all the sudden suck.
This goes to show you how scouting really helps your team. Teams complain about the slotting system, but instead of giving Carlos Silva or Juan Pierre a $55 mil/5 year deal, they could have given them a 3 year/$27 mil deal. That extra $3 mil could go to getting those prospects and helping the farm system. It makes it easier that the Red Sox have the money to do whatever they please, but they realize the importance of getting the good prospects, no matter the cost. Other teams haven't learned that, yet. Anyway, back to the "Big Three". Here are their scouting reports:
Clay Buchholz: Four seamer at 94-97 mph, and plus-plus curveball and change-up
Jon Lester: Four seamer at 93-95 mph, above-average curve and change
Justin Masterson: Plus sinker at 89-95 mph, above-average slider, improving change (needs third pitch to be elite starter)
